Next to a song writer , Mazeter is a writer authoring poems and stories, like his Poster Card Series, and has a number of professional journals and articles published.Nick likes to state, although his professional articles date back to as early as 1992, working as (chief) editor and author on many IT and marketing articles for professional magazines and journals, he still considers this, writing and being an author, as a rather fresh and still to be developed area of work. It coincides logically with his lyrics and song writing, yet explores different grounds and ‘themes’.
Maybe this originates from how I compose music. It’s all a storyline, envisioning a concept at first in words, then visuals, then feelings, and finally, music.
“I have always written stories. Short ones at first, in school. Later on just things I’d like to write for myself. Because writing comes natural to me, I was asked to write for magazines and journals professionally. And it sort of always stuck. So I began exploring writing stories and I started plotting ideas on a storyboard. Events, things which might happen. Working out details and how everything intertwines within the story, connecting the dots. So I might have a storyline and a plot, then work backwards. Working clues back in but hiding them. It’s challenging and so much fun. It’s like there’s maybe a concept first, then a bunch of ideas, and then a storyline develops and things fall into place. Mostly when it does, it becomes music, but over recent years I have discovered I use these storylines to plot a vision which goes beyond. Until somebody pointed out that might actually become a book, which funny enough sort of escaped my mind”.
Nick’s poems and short stories originate back to 2003. Some of it is also related to a composition and an underlying storyline on which it was based, “The Butterfly Effect” (which is featured on the upcoming album ‘Resonance – Part II” – ed. ‘Annalee’). Continuing about his developing work as an author, he says:
“Currently I use my writing skills to plot out my albums and script my (music) video ideas. The very first success as an author was in 2013 when some short stories I published got picked up and all of a sudden I was voted “author of the week”. Now that sounds nice but it to me it felt at the same time as such a short-lived success. Also because it inspired a different kind of work which i have started publishing: short poems, sayings, sometimes just thoughts. Themed by what’s going on in the media. And that did raise interest at a publisher, so it’s very exiciting to find out how that will develop.
So it’s fair to say I am still finding my way here. But in terms of books I don’t expect anything to rise soon. Having a good story plot is one thing, developing good characters, personalities and relationships which drive the story is something else. Yeah, I am progressing, but as said for music, ‘becoming your own toughest critique’, I’ll need to give that time and discover if and when a first book might be good enough as a manuscript. Or maybe start co-writing together with a more experienced author, we’ll see”.
